Using the right amount of medicine

How much to use

  • Usually, a steady dose of VYALEV is given hourly through infusion. If needed, you may receive an extra dose or your hourly infusion rate may be adjusted to avoid the need for an extra dose – your dose will be determined by your prescribing specialist.
  • If 5 or more extra doses are required in a 24-hour period, contact your prescribing specialist so they can decide if your medication dose needs to be adjusted.
  • Follow the instructions given to you and continue to use VYALEV unless your prescribing specialist tells you to stop.

If you use more than you should

If you think that you have used too much VYALEV, you may need to seek urgent medical attention. Immediately contact your prescribing specialist or the Poisons Information Centre (13 11 26) for advice or go to the Emergency Department at your nearest hospital, even if you are not experiencing any signs of discomfort or poisoning. Take the medicine pack with you.

If you forget to resume VYALEV

The vial(s) should be changed at the same time each day. If you forget to resume VYALEV, start your pump as soon as possible.

  • For interruptions longer than 1 hour, make sure to change your infusion set (this includes tubing, insertion device and cannula) and rotate to a different infusion site before resuming your VYALEV infusion.
  • For interruptions longer than 3 hours, you may need to also administer a loading dose to re-establish your symptom control.
Do not suddenly stop using VYALEV without first discussing with your prescribing specialist.

Administering VYALEV

VYALEV is administered under the skin of the abdomen (belly) using a small, flexible plastic channel connected to your VYAFUSER® Pump. This pump gives you the medicine 24 hours a day.

The instructions provided below are supplementary to the VYALEV Instructions for Use leaflet (IFU). Always read the IFU in full before using VYALEV. You can also refer to the Step-by-step Infusion Guide as you administer your VYALEV treatment.

Looking after your medicine

Follow the instructions in the product packaging on how to take care of your medicine properly.

Keep VYALEV in the refrigerator (at 2°C to 8°C). Do not freeze.

The vials may be kept at room temperature up to a maximum of 30°C for a single period of up to 28 days (record the date when you remove the medicine from the refrigerator on the packaging).

Vials that are for use beyond 28 days should be stored and transported refrigerated (at 2°C to 8°C).

Keep VYALEV out of reach of children.

Once the medicine has been stored at room temperature, do not return the medicine to the refrigerator.

  • Discard the syringe, and any unused medicine left in the syringe, after VYALEV has been in the syringe for 24 hours.
  • Discard VYALEV solution if it has been stored at room temperature (up to 30°C) for longer than 28 days.
  • Do not use VYALEV after the expiry date.

Disposing of your used VYALEV and supporting items

  • After you have administered VYALEV, place your used syringe, vial, vial adapter, and infusion set tubing into the disposable sharps container straight away.
  • Keep your disposable sharps container in a safe and secure location, out of reach and sight of children.

When your sharps container is full, you can:

Speak with your pharmacist to see if they offer a sharps disposal service

Check with your local council as they may have a service you can use

Check with your local public hospital as some can support sharps disposal

Download the Managing Waste leaflet to learn more about safe disposal of your treatment.
